The Barkin\u2019 Basement provides funding to the no-kill Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley. The Community Library in Ketchum was started in 1955 with a one dollar donation from\u00a0seventeen ladies who opened The Gold Mine Thrift Shop to raise funds to build a library that still today\u00a0receives no funding from local, state or federal taxes.\u00a0 The Attic Thrift helps to support the programs of The Advocates, a local nonprofit promoting a compassionate community free from emotional and physical abuse. The universal motto of these thrifts\u00a0is &#8220;If we don&#8217;t have it, you don&#8217;t need it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although treasures are found daily in these thrifts, all have\u00a0quarterly sales to clear merchandise and make room for the upcoming season&#8217;s items.\u00a0During the spring cleanout at The Barkin\u2019 Basement, we spied a dusty box on the lower shelf with an odd name <em>Spirali,<\/em> an unknown brand <em>Lurch<\/em>, and a description of the contents in German. Photos on the box depicted vegetables shaped like noodles. Wow, pasta without the guilt.\u00a0 We snapped a cell phone photo of the box to research, but then decided to purchase as all the parts, including the instructions, seemed to be in the box, and, with the day\u2019s discount, the cost was five dollars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spirali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-147 \" src=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spirali-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"Spirali\" width=\"250\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spirali-300x234.jpg 300w, http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spirali-1024x799.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spirali.jpg 1690w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a> Returning home with our new kitchen gadget, I checked the brand <em>Lurch<\/em> online and found a similar piece of equipment at\u00a0kitchen retailers.\u00a0\u00a0Little did we\u00a0know that\u00a0our new\u00a0<em>Spirali<\/em> is the German model of one of the current most popular culinary aids, the Spiralizer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Our <em>Spirali<\/em> makes zucchini into pasta, carrots into rice, sweet potatoes into curly fries, and\u00a0smiles in our stomachs.\u00a0 \u00a0The Internet is laden with veggie noodle recipes, and a few blogs are totally dedicated to spiralzed fare.<\/p>\n<p>Our first dish, that very evening, was coconut shrimp soup with yam noodle,\u00a0with an Asian tofu zucchini noodle salad on the side. Happy, very happy with our new culinary find.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-duo-vertical.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-180 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-duo-vertical-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Spiral duo vertical\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-duo-vertical-230x300.jpg 230w, http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-duo-vertical-786x1024.jpg 786w, http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-duo-vertical.jpg 1840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The leftovers from this \u00a0grilled chicken breast with roasted yam\u00a0fries and a spiral onion-zucchini-tomato salad was our picnic the next evening on the lawn at the Sun Valley Pavilion while listening to the Sun Valley Summer Symphony.\u00a0 A small child wandered over to pet and talk to our Huskies, spied our salad, and exclaimed, &#8220;Mama, I want pasta like that.&#8221;\u00a0 Aha, what a great way to encourage little picky eaters to\u00a0learn to love\u00a0and eat their vegetables.\u00a0 With supervision older children\u00a0might find it fun to crank the handle\u00a0to make the noodles, but beware, the blades are extremely sharp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-with-Cjox.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-150 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-with-Cjox-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"Spiral with Cjox\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-with-Cjox-300x196.jpg 300w, http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Spiral-with-Cjox-1024x671.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">These zucchini spinning tops on\u00a0our shrimp\u00a0bowl\u00a0are what is left of the vegetable after spiralizing, making an instant garnish.\u00a0 The sauce for\u00a0these yellow and green zucchini spirals is a\u00a0butternut squash puree with coconut milk and chipotle,\u00a0served with\u00a0a\u00a0scatter of\u00a0scallions and roasted peanuts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2014-Spiralized-with-Shrimp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-176\" src=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2014-Spiralized-with-Shrimp-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"2014 Spiralized with Shrimp\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2014-Spiralized-with-Shrimp-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/tipsytable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2014-Spiralized-with-Shrimp-1024x577.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">As Planet Earth spirals on its axis, this unique gadget is fast becoming a tool of choice not only in kitchens, but in beauty shops around the world.
